Ingredients that damage your skin
1.
Parabens
Also listed as: Methylparaben, Propylparaben, , Ethyl paraben Butylparaben
Parabens are synthetic preservatives used to extend shelf life in lotions, shampoos, and makeup. They mimic estrogen in the body, disrupting your hormonal system.
Why It Matters
Linked to breast cancer tissue studies, fertility issues, and early puberty. Have been found in breast tumor tissue biopsies.
4.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Also listed as: SLS, SLES, Sodium Laureth Sulfate
A harsh detergent and foaming agent found in shampoos, toothpastes, and cleansers. Strips the skin's natural protective oil barrier and is easily absorbed.
Why It Matters
Damages the skin barrier, causes irritation, and may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane — a probable carcinogen — during manufacturing.
7.
Synthetic Fragrance
Listed simply as: "Fragrance" or "Parfum"
A single word that can legally hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, including phthalates, synthetic musks, and allergens. Fragrance is the #1 cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis.
Why It Matters
Triggers respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and allergic reactions. The lack of disclosure laws makes it one of the most dangerous loopholes in cosmetic regulation.
2.
Formaldehyde
Also listed as: DMDM Hydantoin, Quaternium-15, Imidazolidine Urea, Diazolidine Urea
These preservatives slowly release formaldehyde gas into your skin over time. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen classified by the WHO and EPA.
Why It Matters
Causes skin sensitization, allergic reactions, and increased cancer risk with chronic low-level exposure through daily use.
5.
Phthalates
Also listed as: DBP, DEHP, DEP — often hidden under "Fragrance"
Phthalates are plasticizers added to make fragrances last longer. Because "fragrance" is considered a trade secret, companies don't have to disclose them on labels.
Why It Matters
Linked to reproductive harm, developmental issues in children, and hormone disruption. Found in the urine of nearly all Americans tested by the CDC.
8.
Petroleum Derivatives
Also listed as: Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Paraffin, Propylene Glycol
Petroleum-derived ingredients coat the skin like plastic wrap, blocking pores and preventing the skin from breathing or releasing toxins naturally.
Why It Matters
May be contaminated with PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) — known carcinogens. Disrupts the skin's natural microbiome and moisture regulation.
3.
Oxybenzone
Also listed as: Benzophenone-3, BP-3
A chemical sunscreen filter that deeply penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream within 30 minutes of application. Detected in blood, urine, and breast milk.
Why It Matters
Disrupts hormones, particularly estrogen and androgen. Also toxic to coral reefs — banned in Hawaii. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide) are a safer alternative.
6.
Lead & Heavy Metals
Also found as: Mercury (Thimerosal), Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium
Heavy metals appear as intentional ingredients (skin lighteners) and as contaminants in lipstick, foundations, and eyeliners. There is no safe level of lead exposure.
Why It Matters
Accumulate in the body causing neurological damage, kidney failure, and cognitive impairment. Disproportionately marketed in products targeting melanin-rich skin.
9.
Triclosan
Also listed as: Microban, Biofresh, DP 300
An antimicrobial chemical added to soaps, toothpastes, and deodorants. Absorbs rapidly through skin and has been detected in human blood, urine, and breast milk at alarming rates.
Why It Matters
Alters thyroid function, contributes to antibiotic resistance, and is classified as a potential carcinogen. Banned in hand soaps by the FDA but still present in many other products.
